Why did Turkish War Planes Kill Kurdish Smugglers?

(Killed smugglers in a trailer)

News agencies announced that 35 young Kurdish people were killed by Turkish War Plane’s via bombs yesterday[1]. Most of agencies stressed that they killed on suspicion of arms smugglers for Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) a Kurdish rebellion organization against the Republic of Turkey.

But a few hours later after the raid, everyone agree with the killed youngs are not members of PKK but only cigarette smugglers[2]. Hüseyin Çelik, Vice President of governing “Justice and Development Party” (AKP) said “if it turns out to have been a mistake, a blunder, rest assured that this will not be covered up”[3]

Pro-Kurdish “Peace and Democracy Party” (BDP) was outraged and angry because of massacre. Selahattin Demirtaş, deputy chairman of the BDP, referred PM Erdoğans own Word about Assad regime before “an administration that murders its own people has no legitimacy”. Demirtaş announced that a three day mourning because of the massacre of young smugglers and added “the day is not for sit at homes. Everyone should hit the squares to damn massacre.”

Smuggling in a historical perspective

Before the answer of the question “why” did smugglers killed, i want to explain smuggling in Turkey easily. Because some officials and commentators said “there was a mistake at aircraft attack but please don’t forget that smuggling is illegal and every state want to get under control borders.”

This argument used to substantiation the massacre with PKK. They said “smuggling is under the control of PKK and we must cut this border trade to decrease financial resources of PKK. Ofcourse PKK receive a share from border trade from Iraq sometimes. But the matter is not about PKK but about a historical process.

Before the making of the nation-state in Turkey there were no any “smuggling” because Syria and Iraq were part of the Ottoman Empire. But after the Worl War I and Turkish Independence War, new borders with Syria and Iraq established.

Capitalist states use tarrifs to protect homeland from the foreign commodities. Before the anything else, every bourgeoisie class fight for “market” for commodities. Process of accumulation of capital need to destroy old regime’s institutions but this is not sine qua non. For Turkey, capitalists agree with old regime in East and South-East of Turkey. Modern Turkey made deals with some feudal Kurdish chieftains and save the feudal structure.

For most of Kurds, livestock and border trade was the only means of life. When new capitalist regime started to create its own border institutions, these border trade become “smuggling” shortly. You should watch two film especially to understand smuggling and border trade between Iran, Iraq and Turkey: A Time for Drunken Horses and Blackboards.

But smugglers are not Kurds only. Most of the border Gates of Turkey using for smuggling and most of officials connive it. Kilis is the “renowned” smuggler province of South Turkey. You can buy every smuggled commodities from Kilis.

İstanbul also a great market for smuggled commodities too. "You can buy anything — nukes, drugs, arms, scientists, viruses," said Mustafa Kibaroglu, an assistant professor of nuclear engineering at Bilkent University in Ankara, Turkey. "Anything goes."[4]

We now that Turkey is the crossroad of human smuggling to Europe. And nearly one month ago we learned that Republic of Turkey helped Libyan islamists arms smuggling to fight against Assad from Hatay, an important border from Turkey to Syria.[5]

It’s enough to Show how smuggling survive in Turkey. There is no crime for smugglers I think. Regime works with smuggling because capitalism is a kind of smuggling.

Government’s Kurdish initiative and bombs

AKP Government was launched “Kurdish initiative” in 2009 and Minister of İnterior Beşir Atalay talked with some journalists to take their opinions about “initiative”.[6]

But suppressions to Kurdish politicians accompanied with the “initiative” process. Nearly 7000(seven thousand) of Kurdish people have been arrested in KCK Case. Most of them are members of pro-Kurdish "Freedom and Democracy Party (BDP)". Some of them are academical persons of some universities.[7]

Deputy Prime Minister Bülent Arınç in Parliament on Dec. 21, where he said, “We will recognize all rights of the Kurds,” as well as a statement by the other deputy prime minister, Beşir Atalay, on Dec. 25 in Kırıkkale in which he said, “We have been working on a democratization package,” have raised expectations for another package. Noting that they have been considering an amendment that would stress that non-violent expression of thought would not be considered a crime or offense, Atalay avoided giving any details on the initiative that also includes changes to the anti-terrorism bill and criminal code.[8]

For my opinion, “Kurdish initiative” and “smugglers massacre” are the other sides of the coin. Ruling class of Turkey need to solve Kurdish issue without any “organised political society”. They try to use religion to supress Kurds.

Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdağ said the government plans to recruit 1,000 new imams on the request of the Religious Affairs Directorate to meet demand in Turkey's Southeast, where there is a shortage of imams, according to a report published by the Hürriyet daily on Monday. Despite the fact that mele do not have a university education in theology, Bozdağ said he appreciates their knowledge of Islam.[9]

“Second” Republic of Turkey is a kind of dictatorship of bourgeoisie. There could be nothing for freedom form any kind of reactionist. Unfortunately, Kurdish initiative is a kind of supression and could not give anything except arrests and bombs.

Freedom in Turkey: Is everything OK except journalists?

Western media talk about press freedom in Turkey nowadays. Odatv and KCK cases caused criticisms from westerm mass media to the Erdoğan Gorvenment.

There are 16 people have been arrested for armed coup denunciation with Odatv case only: Yalçın Küçük, Soner Yalçın, Barış Terkoğlu, Barış Pehlivan, Doğan Yurdakul, Müyesser Uğur, Coşkun Musluk, Sait Çakır, Ahmet Şık, Hanefi Avcı, Nedim Şener, Kaşif Kozinoğlu (died in jail), Mümtaz İdil, İklim Bayraktar. [1] Proof of the denunciations is some documents from suspecteds computers. But technical reports of experts proved that “proof”s are spam. [2]

Media shows great interest to Odatv case because these journalists are famous with opposition to Justice and Development Party(AKP). You can read a few articles in most of western media about suppressions against journalists in Turkey.

At the same time with these arrests, tens of journalists have been arrested with denunciation of being a member of Union of Kurdistan Communities (KCK). Prosecutors claim is KCK is a par tor Kurdistan Workers Party(PKK) which fight with arms against Republic of Turkey.

Nearly 100 journalists were arrested since 2009 in Turkey and most of them denounciated with being a member of terrorist organizations.[3]

Committee to Protect Journalists comdemned journalists arrests in Turkey with an open letter to Turkish PM Recep Tayyip Erdoğan:
CPJ's researchers systematically investigated every one of the estimated 64 journalists in jail in your country on December 1 to determine the reason for their incarceration. While we were able to confirm in eight cases that the charges were related to journalism, we condemn the jailing of every single journalist in Turkey because of pervasive due process violations. In many instances investigated by CPJ, the judicial process itself has been opaque and the charges unsubstantiated.[4]

How about political freedom in Turkey?

I don’t want to give new examples about press suppression of the AKP Government more. But there is some problems to western approach to press freedom in Turkey.

Firstly, as i wrote before, press suppression is wider than western media want to see. Especially Ahmet Şık and Nedim Şener are famous and most of people think they are “innocent”. But how about other journalists? Are they really terrorists? I don’t think so.

The “real crime” of the most of these journalists is being against AKP Government. And not only these journalists but more of opponents of AKP and its reactionary “Second Republic” are being arrested in any time.

Please remember Hopa Case now. 22 students were arrested because of the joining mass protests against AKP.[5] Some students are in jail yet because of they want “free education” only.

Secondly, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and his staff use political and ideological violence against everyone to survive their aims. But western mass media don’t criticise these aims and implementations.

Think about the Syria case please. Turkey is forcing Assad to make reforms for its “own people”. But everyone know that these Word came from the lips of USA.

Nearly 7000(seven thousand) of Kurdish people have been arrested in KCK Case. Most of them are members of pro-Kurdish "Freedom and Democracy Party (BDP)". Some of them are academical persons of some universities.

But Erdoğan, who forced Assad to make reforms, defended KCK arrests including Büşra Erşanlı, a member of the Peace and Democracy Party's (BDP) Party Council and its Constitutional Commission, Belge Publishing House representative Ragıp Zarakolu and dozens of others were accused of establishing a terrorist organization, leading a terrorist organization and membership in a terrorist organization.[6]

Ergenekon and Sledgehammer Cases

Dani Rodrik is a famous journalist on economics. His wife is doughther of Çetin Doğan who is one of the suspects of  Ergenekon and Sledgehammer Cases. You should read his article from his blog to understand how about “law” in Turkey.[7]

Western allies of AKP supported these trials and acclaimed Recep Tayyip Erdoğan as a second founder of Turkey. As i wrote before:
Right to a fair trial forgotten with Ergenekon and Sledgehammer trials. Opposites of AKP were in jailed to organize a terror organization against "public sovereignity". But most of suspects were believe in different ideological approaches. Some of them were revolutionists but some others were counter-revolutionists who tortured them before.
They call this as "further democracy"... But its only the Second Republic.[8]
I wrote these article because i need to explain reality of Turkish democracy and freedom. The problem is not only about Ahmet Şık and Nedim Şener but most of journalists. The problem is not only for journalists but most of people who are against AKP policies.

And western allies of AKP support these crimes against people. They all are colloborators of AKP suppression against people in Turkey.

Arab Spring and Turkey-US Relations

Turkey's foreign relations was based on cold war era for decades. As a partner of NATO, Turkey was identified herself as eastern castle of western democracy against "Soviet threat". This approach was the main board of Turkish foreign diplomacy but The Soviet Union was collapsed in 1991.

After the Soviet collapse, Turkey tried to increase relations with some former Soviet states which are Turkic Republics. But Turkey's aim was failed and at the same time, Turkey's bid for Europe Union membership replaced the first rank on the Turkish foreign policy agenda. But EU membership process seemed to take longer time than Turkish officers wishes.

Crisis of the first of the March 2003

During the Iraq War, US wanted to carry out her troops and weapons from Turkey to the Iraq. Some interpreteures thought that its the opportunity to increase relations with US and show EU that Turkey has more alternative except EU membership.

But there were a great mass movement against Iraq War and Justice and Development Party (AKP) not argued with them succesfully. There were different views on the mass media and Turkey was failed to make her own way.

Leftist movement holded a mass meeting against Government Licence to US troops and weapons. More than a hunderd thousands of people were in Ankara to restrain Assembly from resolution for US troops and weapons. And The Assembly was rejected the US bid.

Transformation of Turkey and Foreign Relations

I have wrote before some opinions about transformation of Turkey with First and Second Republic metaphors:

Second Republic no longer a sovereign and secular state. Religion has a great realm in the social life and public sphere. Being independence condemns as anachronism or terrorism.

Kemalist policy of "Peace at Home, Peace in the World" give way to new-Ottomanism and its expanding policies in the Middle East and Northern Africa especially. ("Second" Republic of Turkey: what is the distinction?)
This transition affected Turkish foreign diplomacy deeply. There were a discussion about Turkish foreign policy priorities. Some people were thought Turkey must create a new ally with Russia, China, Iran and India. But supporters of this idea were arrested with denunciation of military coup attempt. Ergenekon and Sledgehammer trials are for these peoples. They did not try to make a military coup but AKP government put them in jail to suppression whole opposition movement.

With the Ahmet Davutoğlu as a Minister of Foreign Relations "zero problems with neighbour" policy become the major priority of Turkish foreign diplomacy. This means that Turkey will fix up relations with former "alien" neighbours for example Greece, Syria and especially Middle Eastern countries.

Turkey become co-president of the Greater Middle East Project with US. Project was against islamist terror and make civilisations ally to protect world order. Everyone was know that US wants to attack Iran after Iraq War. And AKP should prepare muslim people. The main mission of the muslim AKP is to convince Middle Eastern people to transition of regian by US interests.

Obama Era: Attack chance for Turkey

I have to make a long quotation from my blog again:
First of all you have to remember that there is no real distinction between US and Turkey's Middle East politics. There are two major privileges of US politics on Middle East: firstly, oil resources have to be designed for US interests and the second, Israel's security have to be provided.

Middle East oil regime was changed with independence movements power in Meddle East with Nasser, Saddam, Gaddafi or other Baath Party like governments. Now, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, imperialists are continuing the transforming Middle East's political order because of change oil regime.

Requirements of Arab Spring riped with The Greater Middle East Project which is PM of Turkey Erdoğan is a co-president. With this strategic concept, US tried to change Middle Eastern regimes with external resources, especially bombs of "civilisation". You may remember G.W. Bush's "crusade" cry.

But there was a problem about foreign pressure: old Middle East regimes and most of the people think that they are under attack of western Cristians and they try to secure Israel. So the Project didn't work well for US interests.

When Obama won the elections, US has started the change strategy over Middle East and Islam. It was not about Obama's personal tendencies but about US interests in Middle East. Israel's aggressivenes was provoking riots and it makes hard to transform Middle East for US.

I think Israel-Lebanon War - 2006 was the break point for US strategy and its time to join MidEast politics for Turkey. Israel was defeated and Hizbullah should be disarmed. But Israel can not solve this problem. Turkey tried to be peace keeper for this but Mubareks Egypt and France did not let Turkey to play a decisive role.

First attempt was failured but the door was opened. After this moment, Turkey acknowledged that she could improve international role as a Muslim power which angaged imperialist interests. But to play a good role, she should be look as if "against" Israel and an insider for Middle Eastern peoples. Now, you should noticed difference between Bush's "crusade" and Obama's speech at Cairo University in 2009.  (Arab Spring" and Turkey: Erdoğan in Wonderland)

In that case, new-Ottomanism policy of AKP has an international opportunity for most of writers. AKP try to be a model for Egypt, Syria and other muslim Middle East and Northern Africa countries. "As a moderate muslim country" AKP said "I have acheived this transformation before the Arab Spring and i should be a model for these countries". Remember Turkey's Erdoğan's visit of Egypt a few months ago. A crowded muslim people were in airport and wellcomed Erdoğan with open arms.

So, we can say clearly that US interests and Turkey's interests are the same in the Middle East because new-Ottomanism is new-Americanism too. There is no conflict between them.

Syria Case and US-Turkey Ally

We can review Syria case to figure out Turkish-US interests too. Let's read from the Web site of The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkey:

Visits at the levels of President, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs have continued to date since 2005. The most recent visits were made in October 2007. Foreign Minister Ali Babacan paid a visit to Syria on 6-7 October 2007 as part of his Middle East tour. Following the visit of Foreign Minister Babacan, President of Syria Assad visited Turkey on 16-19 October 2007. In the course of the visit, “Memorandum of Understanding for Cooperation between Turkey and Syria” was signed between the foreign ministers of the two countries. In the MoU are the mutual steps to be taken about the projects that are already under process and which have the potential to be realized under the titles of “Politics and Security”, “Economy” and “Energy and Water”. In this context, continuation of collaboration in the fight against terrorism, raising of mutual investments also as a part of the FTA, restoration of the present border gates and the opening of new ones, acceleration of the work about the Arab Natural Gas Pipeline Project, deepening of the cooperation between the Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO) and the Syrian Oil Company and progress in visits and opinion exchange in the field of water were agreed.

Turkish-Syrian cooperation bears prominence in terms of establishment of regional peace and stability. In this context, Turkey holds consultations with Syria about the regional issues such as Iraq, Israeli-Palestinian conflict and Lebanon, and strives to make contributions for the solution of these problems in a collaborative manner with the international community.

Turkish-Syrian relations will continue to be developed in line with the main target of serving the common interests of the peoples of the two countries as well as contributing to the regional stability and security. ( Turkey's Political Relations with Syria )

But there had been a decisive turn the Turkish point of view about 8 months ago. Everyone must reply the question of "why". Because we can read this press release form the same page of Ministery of Foreign Affairs:

The social developments taking place in our neighbor Syria for the last couple of months have been followed very closely and patiently by Turkey along with the international community.

Turkey had been expecting and patiently waiting for the realization of the pledged reforms aiming to meet the just and legitimate aspirations of the brotherly Syrian people within the shortest time, as well as finding a solution to the issue through dialogue and peaceful methods.

Turkey, throughout this process, has mobilized all resources at its disposal in order to keep close contact with the Syrian administration, to address the needs of our Syrian brothers and to provide its constructive contributions to the reform process in all means.

However, we see with deep regret that violence and loss of lives have increasingly been the case. Along with the continuing operations in Homs, Deirezzor and Daraa, we have learned that many have been killed and wounded in the operations launched this morning against the residents of Hama who have refrained from violence from the outset and strived to engage in dialogue with the administration.

Turkey had expected efforts to be exerted towards creating an atmosphere of peace and tranquility in the holy month of Ramadan, and is deeply disappointed and saddened by these developments on the eve of holy Ramadan as rest of the Islamic world.

These operations do not contribute to the restoration of order in Syria, but hamper the process of needed reforms. These kind of operations and violence do not achieve solutions, but rather create a deadlock. It is time for the Syrian administration to see this reality.

The current developments raise suspicions regarding the intention and sincerity of the Syrian administration to resolve the issue through peaceful methods.

Turkey reiterates its call upon the Syrian government to end the operations and resort to political methods, dialogue and peaceful initiatives in order to reach a solution. (No:178, 31 July 2011, Press Release Regarding the Recent Developments in Syria)

Someone should explain us the reason of this turn without US interests. The whole world knows that Mr. Davutoğlu carry out US decisions to Syria. You can see the harmony of the sanctions of imperialists with Turkey's too.

Turkey try to open the door of Iran with Syria and try to prepare muslim peole with a sectarian war. Pro-AKP newspapers write systematically that" Syria is a sunni country but a Alawite minority is ruling and use force to supress its own people.

AKP regime in Turkey supress its own Alawites but try to use Syrian sectarian conflict to open Iran door because mass media of Turkey write "Iran help Syrian Alawite minority to supress people". In that case, if there will be a Syrian War, Turkish public opinion will support AKP government as a part of "sectarian war".

So, the victory of AKP will mean that the victory of US and its imperialist allies. An the defeat of AKP will mean the stumble of US plans on Middle East.

Hopa Case in Turkey

I have wrote a news on Hopa Case before. 22 young leftists were in jail for 6 months until 9 December 2011. The first court of the Hopa Case was in Ankara, capital city of Turkey.

It was a cold snowy morning but there were thousand of supporters of the arrested youngs. Most of democratical organizations members were ready to protest of governments suppression against leftist movement in Turkey. Especially The Communist Party of Turkey, Halkevleri and ÖDP members were crowded.

Before the court, The Communist Party of Turkey make a ststement on the suppression against socialist movement. President of ÖDP and Halkevleri were also talked to the crowded. Erkan Baş, member of the Central Committee of the Communist party of turkey said that they will return to home with their members who was in jailed.

Erkan Baş (member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Turkey)

Anonymous : Open Letter to the World's Journalists. (Mirror & Tweet)

Greetings,
This is an open letter to all journalists of the free world. We encourage you to stand forth in solidarity with your fellow journalists who have been arrested in Turkey. Currently the count is now up to one hundred and seventeen members of the press and mainstream media. This is an attack on free speech and democracy not only for the citizens of Turkey but also for the world.

We ask the world's media and journalists to investigate and dig into the cult leader Fethulah Gulen and into his cult followers who have been placed around the world to open schools and business. Gulen and cult members are trying to dominate the world's education systems and raking billions of dollars annually with no regard for law, safety and equal rights in any country that they have infiltrated, it is now time to hold them accountable. Gulen has tremendous political clout in Turkey and his cult members abuses the privileges to serve the public by labeling those who stand against them or to write about them by calling them terrorists for which they arrested for.

Gulen has had already over one thousand lawsuits filed against private citizens in his home country for insulting him or his agenda. They abuse the democracy to ensure fear and scare tactics against anyone who wishes to challenge them. This should never be tolerated and we should all fight back. He told his followers to do the same through his own private media outlet, the Today's Zaman. However in free and a true democratic country Gulen has no power to control the media. We will not be silenced. We stand with the protestors of Turkey and to news writers worldwide.

Gulen, recently in one of his weekly video broadcasts to cult members favors the idea of censoring the internet, to cease the flow of information and journalistic creativity. He approves of filtering, censoring websites and government controlled monitoring systems to spy on the common citizen.

We ask the journalists from around the world to research further and to write about the Fethullah Gulen cult and their objectives in every free country around the world. We ask for solidarity in that you the world media and demand the journalists to be released. We ask for radio, television, newspaper, bloggers and tweeters to get behind us and to share this message to as many media outlets as possible.

Anonymous will always stand for the free flow of information around the world, for human rights, for free speech and democracy around the globe. It is time to prove that the pen to become mightier the sword. We stand with you journalists of the internet and the entire free world. We ask that you protest with us and expose the corrupt Gulen Movement and for what they really stand for. We ask to raise global awareness.

We ask that you help protect our children from the misinformed. We ask that you help hold those accountable the corrupt enablers in the public view. Fellow Anonymous members will continue to help spread this message to as many media outlets as well.

"We are Anonymous. We are Legion. We do not forgive. We do not forget. Expect us."

Free Syrian Army and Turkey

Syrian opposition and Turkey's relations with Free Syrian Army has created tension between Bashar al-Assad regime and Turkey. Syrian authorities claimed that Free Syrian Army infiltrated into Syria from Turkey and attacked to Syrian soldiers.

Ofcourse Turkey was dennied Syrian claims about Free Syrian Army. But everyone knows that chief of the Free Syrian Army Riad al-Assad's headquarters is in Hatay. And we know that about 600 Libyan islamist entered Syria from Turkey border as mercenary a few weeks ago.1

Now, every Turkish pople should think about this. Is supporting a terrorist organization against a neighbour normal? Turkish Penal Code article 306  bans recruit against a foreign state. But Free Syrian Army recruit with help of Turkisy state officers. This show us hypocrisy of Erdoğan government and western imperialists on Syria and Arab Spring.

Most of western people read news like "Syrian authorities crackdown against peoples peaceful protests". But Syrian officers announced that Syrian opposition killed about 1000 soldiers and assassinated academics and religious leaders who support Assad regime.2

Now please think about a deadly attack of Free Syrian Army by infiltrating from Turkey. What should Syrian troops do? What would be happen if they will make a cross-border operation against these terrorist attacks?
